Imperial Crypt and Imperial Treasury in Vienna: Tickets, Hours and Which to Choose
Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
See the Imperial Treasury if you want the objects, the crypt if you want the story of the family. The two sit a short walk apart in the old town and answer different questions: the Imperial Treasury shows what the Habsburgs owned, the Imperial Crypt shows where they ended up. Plan around one fact: the Treasury is closed on Tuesdays.
Imperial Treasury
The Treasury is in the Swiss Wing, the oldest part of the Hofburg. It holds the Austrian imperial crown, the insignia of the Holy Roman Empire, the Order of the Golden Fleece treasure, the cradle of Napoleon’s son, the King of Rome, and some of Empress Elisabeth’s jewellery. The booking page also lists the Holy Lance, what it calls the largest cut emerald in the world, and an agate bowl it presents as the Holy Grail.
- Opening hours: daily except Tuesday, 9:00 to 17:30, with last entry 30 minutes before closing.
- Price: €16 online, €18 at the door. Reduced €12 online. Under 19 enter free.
- Time slots: since 1 April 2026 you can only enter in a reserved slot, so book your slot online before you go.
- Audio guide: the museum charges €5 for it. The booking page for the single ticket lists an audio guide among the inclusions, so check on the page whether the price covers it.
- Time needed: a reviewer completed it in about an hour. The listing is rated 4.4 with 1,998 reviews.
Imperial Crypt
The crypt lies below the Capuchin church on Neuer Markt, and the entrance is on Tegetthoffstraße. About 150 Habsburgs are buried in its ten vaults, among them Maria Theresia, Franz Joseph, Elisabeth and their son Rudolf. It is quiet and compact. A reviewer who skipped the tour needed about 40 minutes, reading the signs, which are in German and English.
- Opening hours: daily 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30.
- Price: €15, or €13 with a Vienna City Card, Vienna Pass, Flexi Pass or Kulturpass.
- Guided tours: the crypt runs its own, with English departures at set times and German several times a day. The times change, so check them on its site.
- Not allowed: luggage and large bags, video recording and, according to the listing, sleeveless shirts.
- Listing: rated 4.6 with 1,791 reviews, marked wheelchair accessible. Confirm access with the crypt before you go.
Above the crypt, the Capuchin church hosts classical concerts by candlelight, rated 4.8 with 304 reviews, if you want to stay for the evening.
Combination tickets
| Ticket | Price | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imperial Treasury | €16 | 4.4, 1,998 reviews | single ticket |
| Imperial Crypt Entrance Ticket | €15 | 4.6, 1,791 reviews | single ticket |
| Kunsthistorisches Museum and Imperial Treasury Combo | €32 | 4.6, 882 reviews | each venue once, valid one year |
| Imperial Treasury and New Hofburg Palace Combo | €34 | 4.3, 762 reviews | valid 10 days from first use |
The art museum alone is €22 for a day, so the combination costs €6 less than the two single tickets at these prices, and it makes sense if you were going to the museum anyway. A reviewer warns that the museum needs at least twice as long as the Treasury and that the voucher has to be printed. The New Hofburg combination adds the Weltmuseum, the musical instruments and the armoury; the audio guide covers the New Hofburg tour, not the Treasury.
Which one to book
- One imperial site, short stay: the Treasury, in a booked slot, for the crowns and jewels.
- Interested in the family and in Sisi: the crypt, and the Sisi Museum tickets next.
- A Tuesday: the crypt. The Treasury is closed.
- A rainy day with time: the Kunsthistorisches Museum combination, spending most of it on the museum.
The Hofburg ticket choices are compared in the Hofburg guide, and more museums and palaces are under attraction tickets in Vienna.
